Contemporary Issue in New Media (Course)

The topic of this week's lecture is about the the issue of New Media which is presented by Professor Benjamin Grosser.

Benjamin Grosser works on new media and interactive design at university of Illinois. It is his speech that link my concepts of design with internet and technologies in the world today and through his lecture, I learnt that designers should have to know all the new things going on in the world so that they can jump into it, learn to use it and excavate even more technologies.

1, Interactive design: Interactive design is a user-centered design that focus on the field of new media such as communication media. Interactive design, just as its name, is a very complicated field because it involves graphic design, game design, web design etc.

2, Understanding media: code, system, website and mechines are involved. People are learning to understand the way that technology work rather than merely know how to use it. People should also need to know how technology changes. Practive based researches are involved. Also the students of new media major works in different field such as software developers and UI designers.

3. Somebody: Somebody is an App introduced by professor to explain the part of interaction design.

"Send your friend a message… a stranger will deliver it verbally! Or you can deliver someone else’s message!Somebody works when lots of people in the same area download it—so invite your friends!" (http://somebodyapp.com) And I find out that this app is supported by Miumiu, the designer of Prada.

4. Senseless drawing bot:

Created by So Kanno and Takahiro Yamaguchi, Senseless drawing bot is a robot that can draw lines of abstract beauty by using the effect of pendulum. The process of drawing depend completely on physics of motion and inertia.

5. Citizenfour: During the lecture, to introduce to use the power of internet, professor Grosser played the trailor of citizenfour which documented interview of Edward Snowden （the hero in PRISM）, a former employee at CIA, who want to reveal the truth about U.S.'s control of personal information of all over the world. Just as Ai Weiwei in China, Snowden was restricted and suppressed in several ways.
