Contemporary Issue in Industrial Design

The Lecture is given by the Professor of Industrial design of U of I, Deana McDonagh. Professor McDonagh studied User-centered design in UK which gave her master of science. Playing and working in the world of industrial design, her goal is to make people's life better.

1: It is a great era to be a designer:

I am aiming to be an industrial designer and that is the reason why I choose the U of I. The lecture give me confidence about my choise because the market now is in need of more functional along with the degree of aesthetic in order to make products more sellable, and the field of such problem-solving techique is defined as industrial design, I will be proud of myself to be a product designer in the future.

2: Work and Time:

The work and time put in of one product is acctually huge. Countless times of drawing and modifying, experimenting and prototype making will be indulged to make a single product. Also, advertisement and branding of the product also require tons of works. People make videos, graphical advertisement, and brosure for that.

3: Money:

It is one of the most crusial part of a design team. Somebody in the class asked Professor McDonagh as a question about the amount of many of a specific design. The answer is 80,000 dollars for the whole thing. It is very costly and even more expensive if you are a beginner because mistakes cost money. However, comparing to fashion design which I considered learning before, it is not extremely costly.

4: Some Sad things to me:

Due to the fact that most designers do not live like "ordinary" people and look at the world differently in life. And their job requires them to frequently travel around the world, some of them may not have family when other has theirs.

5: To be an industrial designer:

An industrial design student is a person can draw, have ideas, and is passionate. I think art foundation courses are preparing me to meet these criterias.

A Tip: When people do not have ideas or stuck on something, think of nature, it is always the solution of the problem.
